The index relies on a normalised formula to prevent regions with naturally larger economies (like Greater London) from inherently skewing as more innovative. The relationship is defined as follows:

Every UK region is calibrated independently based on its own historical R&D and patenting trends. For instance, if the South East achieves a numerical score of 1.50%, it might receive a ‘B’ grade. However, that exact same 1.50% score in Northern Ireland—which has a historically different baseline—might yield an ‘A’ grade. The inventionINDEX ensures regions are judged against their own historical capabilities rather than solely against distinct geographic powerhouses.
